Eastern Front March 19th 1942
Dear Parents and Grand Dad !
I just got a bunch of the 100 gram parcels and aletter fron Feb 22nd and things are getting through now. I am glad to see that you pack the items so well and thank you very much. Keep doing it in the Summer too, so the Butter does not run out. I can tell you that I write at least 3 times in the week, and if you get no mail, then its not my fault. Most of your parcels have arrived even the 2 from Borstal. I have answered them already. If some letters don’t arrive, remember, it is a long way home from here and a letter goes through many a hand and may be “ Sabrali” as the Russians say, a thief. I just got out of the Ukrainian theater and I have to guard this place for 8 days and keep the stoves going too. Its amazing how many an artistis amongst us Soldiers here. Our General, Recknagel is his name, announced a new show right here near the front. The enemy is constantly up with observation air craft . No news about furlough , I am still ok, I am not ill and the infection on my leg I treat with hot water. Lets hope the Russian war is over soon. Your
Heinrich.
