Göttingen Nov 5th 1940
Dear Parents!
It is now noon here and I start this letter to write and will finish it later tonight. I am well and I looked up the mail news but the parcel has not arrived yet. But I think there will be one on the way for me. We are very busy here lately and that will last at least for the next 5-6 weeks. By the end of the month is the big
inspection and after that we will go to Bergen to the live firing range. This means we shall be loaded up on trains . We had some rainy days here and in Göttingen some parts are under water. The River Leine has burst its banks and the Army food depot was under water. Yesterday afternoon 80 men of us were transported by trucks to the depot to save 2000 cwt of Peas, Rice and other things to bring into a dry place. and it was a tedious hard job I can assure you.. My back is aching now, with a cwt sack over the shoulder we had to walk through a foot of water. By the time the depot was cleared it was 11.30 PM and the Officers and Sgt’s stood around and did nothing. I had a good Saturday with Heinz Bade afterwards and we went to the theater and it is far better than something in Rehren. In the evening we went to a Restaurant to eat, being Soldiers we got some without the Ration coupons. We hope for a bigger bread ration soon, we all put a complain in to the Commander about not enough bread so please send me some food. My best source for food is you at home. Tomorrow we go to the Rifle Range if I am good at it, I apply for weekend furlough. We can get 3 days weekend leave. So what are you doing and how are you? You already have sown the rye and is he doing well? If you already have done all the work outside, you got nothing more to do. I suppose the Tractor is a wonderful thing , did you get all the beets into the barn? What else is there you doing? Have you got Ludwig Gellermans Address in Hamburg? Dear Parents, I wont write long letters very often because of pressing time and not in the mood to write to often and I feel here like at home , I got some good Comrades with me here too.
We talk a lot when there is the time for it. Before I forget, send me my wallet and my wrist watch back It looks so stupid to keep money in a chest bag round the neck. Send me some Beet syrup please my Comrades also get parcels every week. I will close now and go for a drink. Greetings to you
Heinrich.
