Rehren Saturday Night On Sept 16th 1944
Dear Heinrich !
Tonight I will write to you again and every day we hope to hear from you but to no avail. Your last letter was from Aug 17th and we don’t know what is going on, we are so worried, but there are 6 others from Rehren in Romania and they have not written either, those are in Romania from Rehren are Vet Leiter, then You, Heini Strreuchmeier, Fritz Theinen, Frieda Thies’s husband and Fritz Hefner in Renneberg. We all hope to hear from you and we are all well here . This week we had a lot of work here, We cleared all the manure heap and took it into the fields , it took us 3 days we fertilized 7 acres , and Father started the plowing the next day with the tractor. This morning he was early in the field with the tractor.
Today is Sunday now Mrs Bellmann came last night and I had to stop writing. It is 2 PM and I continue the letter. Father is gone to the Firing Range as he is in the S.A. Service. The news are coming soon and I wonder if the Americans have taken Aachen. Dear Heinrich, what will happen to all of us, I thought the attacks by the Enemies were all stopped now at the border. Here we have more refugees every day, all from the West, Yesterday 100 arrived in Kassel, there will be room count here in town tomorrow, but I wont be moving from here, we want to stay and where should we go? We can not move and leave everything we have. But we also want you to come back home soon. Father had always hopes but lately his head is down too, because he does not know what to think of it all. Mail has not come back yet from what we send. Friday night Lina from Rennenberg was here and asked us if we had mail from you. She-said that Fritz had been in hospital and had no news since Aug 22™. Mrs Dehen is sick and can not get to work, Yes Heinrich, they have no worries so far, he has nothing seen of the front yet, and there is us, who can not sleep because of worries. How nice would it be if the war was over, and we can all work together again. We lose all interest in it, but work we have to do we can not let it all go down, and work helps to forget the worries for a while. 3 days ago we the 3™ time the clover we had 5 clamps full, and a small lot for the calves too. Potatoes were lifted last Monday 2 wagons full, and Father plowed the field already over. This season we will put in half wheat and half Rye in that field. Down below we will put in 2 acres of Rape. Other fields are ready now for sowing the oats. On Tuesday we are going to lift the rest of the potatoes and then we have to harvest all the plums. The plum trees are so full, they look blue from afar. In the Village all is quiet, Heini Bleideshel has been send to the west to dig anti tank trenches, , Grand Dad is sitting on the Sofa and thinks of you, , he often sits there and prays for you with his hands folded, and then he says “ I wonder where the Boy is”? Father is in the S.A. he had to, and they suppose to be the local Police force now. Last night they had to check on all the farms whether the Russian Workers were in and searched them for hidden weapons. Father got back at midnight. Lets hope that he will not be called up, what could we do then, but we heard that all the Farmers will stay home This week and last week we had good Harvest weather,. Harras our dog lays under the table and is barking. These days he always barks if someone comes. He has grown big, we love him but he seems to play with things and then hides them. Old Mr Eberling is not going to make it for long, he has Cancer of the liver, he hardly can speak now, his son Wilhelm has not written since July, he is in France, we all think that if we have revenge weapond, why don’t we use them then? They should be used now that our borders are in danger. Enemy Bombers flying over each night towards Berlin, and last night they bombed Brunswick once again. Dear Heinrich, we are very worried about you and no wonder, because we have not heard from you for such a long time lets hope for the best. We just hope that you are in good health and we wish you all the very best , I just don’t know what to write , that is how worried we are.
Father, Mother and Grand dad.
