East April 8th 1943

Dear Brother in Law.

Thank you for the letter from March 19th and thank you for the news from Artur and Werner. I am glad to hear that Werner is in southern France, that is the safest and best place to be. This morning I was lice hunting again, but apart from that, I am well. I wished this war will end, I am now in charge of a group new recruits because the Sgt is sick. I am the oldest Corporal here, I rather would like to be the lowest private. As I am in charge, I have to do trench duty to make sure everyone is at their job, and I am responsible for the lot. Then I am here in a bad position where the Russians can crawl under cover almost to our lines. Because of that I don’t get much sleep either, during the day we work ourselves deeper into the ground. If it rains, the whole trench collapses.

Well, I will close nowand I hope to see you soon again.

Your Artur
