My dear Marianna and dear Parents,
Today was a very hot day again and went to the rifle range ain overalls, and when we got back, we could wring our clothing out from the sweat. I washed the Overalls and hang it up for drying. You letter # 14 from July 2nd came and thank you very much and I answere it already. I wanted to know more about June 29th and Mrs Calla gkhas written too. She told me that the enemy Bombers were seen crossing over head, and in Lungenau they had dropped 3 Bombs, and then flew on in the direction of Chemnitz. In Gerichswalde there were a few more bombs dropped by the same group of planes. and it was estimated about 20 fell there. Martin Haupt will be surprised when he hears of that. What did Mrs Haupt has to say about it that the Niederwerfer Family moved into the apartment? Oma Prater and Lotte were here when the Alert sounded and came with us into the shelter. The certainly chosed the wrong day for a visit, and to them it was the same as it happened to me in my last furlough. Yes, times are bad now, but I am nevertheless happy that you celebrated Gerd’s birthday because the little boy needs some enjoyment. Just tell him not to pick anything up out on the streets, My Comrade Werner had a letter from his wife telling him that an enemy Bomber was shot down near Größnitz . Yes I was so glad that Grandma Prater came to the boys birthday party. When I got to Cella today, they said that your wife has not been to but strawberries I suppose they knew about it from the letter. He also said that his wife had an exceptional good sr\strawberry harvest, Mrs Bartel and all others talked about the good fruit. In other words, we could have had plenty more. Just get as much as you can. Even from here a few folks went there to stock up. I wonder what has happened to Martin Haupt, please let me know about him.
Today I also had a letter from Zierdeck Karl, and he is still on the southern Russian Front, and would love to go home on furlough. He has not seen his new born Baby yet, but his wife keeps writing long letters to him. Our Sgt was promoted to day to 1 Sgt and tomorrow a party will be held but I will be careful, and the 1* Sgt is not a lover of much Drinking. For now I close and send Greetings to all, with many Kisses and I hope all is well,
Your Ewald and Vati and 1000 Kisses for Gerd.
