Dear All at Home !
I am writing again today even there is no need for it but we a few restful hours and during the foggy night we crossed the Dnjper River, . On a small ponton bridge we managed to get the Guns and wagons across to the eastern side. The Russians have retreated again and their Artillery can not reach us now. Their Air force had tried their best to stop us but to no avail . During the night our Pioniers build a temporary bridge to get us over and they take the bridge down before daylight. I dug myself a nice safe selter trench against Bombs and Flak shrapnel.. The Dnjeper is about 4 times as wide as the Weser River back home. Here there is not much of country, mostly all swamps and where there is none, it is white sand. I enclose a bit of money for you for the outlays that occur for me. Dear Mother, the parcels with fat and cookies are always welcomed , I suppose Father and Grand dad are busy in the fields. Lets hope the war is over soon, before the winter arrives. We are glad that the Postal service works over all these Kilometers or we would be in trouble.
Many Greetings Heinrich
