Russia Sept 26th 1941

Dear All at Home !

Now is the opportunity to take the writing paper out of the bag and sit down an write a few words. I have the time now, a bridge in front of us was blown up and the Pioneers are working to build a new crossing. They have a few hours yet to work before we can cross over. We all wonder where are we going here in Russia, you at home can be happy not to be part of our advance. Those that have died in Battle so far have no more worries. The others, who are still alive and fighting do not know what will happen to them. I am suffering from Rheuma now and have a hard time falling asleep. We have to steal the bread from the Civilians, or beg for it from the Motorized troops but I am well, and hope the same from you. I think that half of our mail is getting lost, and the Money Bills I put in letters almost never reach you. Please let me know how much in all you had so far from me. You can send me now some Butter or Fat, also Sausage and my old Pullover. Let me always know how work is going at home. Slowly we are getting fed up with this nomadic life , no home no peace. I am beginning to wonder where and how we are going to spend the winter. If only I knew that I will be home next year and not participate in the war against England as well. Since June we have advanced 2000 Kilometers, always on horse back, with the horses pulling heavy Artillery. Just keep on praying that I come home in good health. My old Comrade Gerhard, a true German with red hair, never gives up. Thank you for the Newspapers too. Greetings to all

Heinrich.
