Russia November 22nd 1941 Dear Parents and Grand dad !
Thank you very much for the 20 parcels and letters that I got within the last 4 days. . On top of it Il, I got 2 cans of sausage as well, the letters I will read with much interest later. But I can not answer them this morning all, we are to busy going forward and today we have to make another 25 to 30 Kilometers in minus 30 C. Fingers and ears are almost frozen, and the feet are burning as if they come out of an oven. The heels are covered in blood , the toes in the socks are gone, and dear Mother, I can do with some new socks. I can tell you that I received the pullover and I also need some darning wool., a pair of long under wear, a shirt . In one of the parcels I founf Butter and that was welcome Also the Maggi cubes and the craem Sausage, I have to keep some of it for bad times ahead. Right ahead of our advance is the Donetz Industrial Area and I doubt if we can find any potatoes there. So don’t send to much bacon and butter but send apples. The butter is very good now in winter the sausage is also ok to send . For Christmas I will save myself a can of pork and plenty of Butter for on my bread. . But I hope that we get out of Russia soon in the coming year. . When this is all over here in Russia, I will get rolling drunk for a change like Father does at times. . I remember one day when you told Mother to fetch you from the Bar with the wheelbarrow. I don’t think I can drink much, I am not used to it, since whitsun I have not drank any alcohol. Make sure that you get the electric stove soon, Is the new Wheat in the ground now? Make sure that the Beets are in a clamp, don’t let the frost get at them. Feed the Horses well in winter, You ought to see some of the horses here that were driven to death. To much pulling, not enough oats and silage or hay, on our march every 100 yards a death horse, our divisional commader id Lt General Stumpf and the Army
Commander is General Reichenau . I will close now and send you Greetings Heinrich.
