Romania Aug 24th 1944

Dear Parents and Grand dad !

I don’t know why it is that I do not get mail from you lately , all my Comrades seem to get letters and parcels and some of the Artillery crews have a new FP # but some will get one after renewed training. That is, if the front here stays quiet . More and more Comrades from the Artillery turn up here because the Infantry need new men. Half the crews with the Artillery are now made up of Ukrainians , traitors to the Soviet Cause, but wear German Uniforms . That shows you how deep the once proud German Wehrmacht has fallen . Let us just hope that all this will come to an end, last week we were constantly engaged in digging new trenches for a line , 3 lines by now, The mail reaches us at time but often it goes to the wrong units. I suppose you are busy in the rye harvesting and I am not there again. I am unable to think all these war years and what I have missed at home, and I hope the time soon comes that I can put my legs under your table. . Today I am satisfied that I am alive, Dear Mother, you could send me a parcel there and again with fat for frying. No, I am not as young as I use to be when I joint the Army in 1940 . There is no more enough to eat here in Romania , we are not allowed to search for chickens or pigs now. I have written several letters since I left Braunschweig but have you got these letters? I shall now wait for an answer from you before I write again let me know the news from home, We don’t hear the fairy tale news that the radio dishes out each day. How are the horses, I hope to come on furlough this year so my dear at home I send you greetings

Your son Heinrich.
