July 8th 1943

Dear Brother in law.

Sending you greetings in conjunction with a short letter from the eastern front. Thank you for the birthday card from June 29th so you are all well at home. This year is the 4th time I am away from home on my birthday. Today we also had a few wounded and a death Comrade from enemy Artillery fire. He died at 6 PM and an hour later a letter came for him that his wife gave birth to a healthy boy. What a sad day for a mother and woman. At home there will be tears and lamentations and here hardly anyone takes notice if a Comrade dies. Lets hope for a speedy end to the war.

Artur.
