Russia Jan 30th 1942

Dear Brother and Sister in law.

Iam writing to you after I had listening to the great speech of our Führer on the Radio. I bet you was listening too. And what a grand speech it was and we believe, that by spring time, when the weather is better, our Forces will smash our enemies to the ground, the Bolchevicks will be beaten for all time. But before that time comes, many a sacrifice has to be made, but a free and eternal Germany will blossom out of it, for our Children and their Children. Here the rumor is ripe, that we will be taken out of the line and go back to Germany to Landau by the Isar, but when and how long it will take nobody seems to know. I am well and hope you too.

Wishing you all the best for your future and Greetings from your

Brother and Brother in Law.

Note: Panzer Pionier Battalion 57 was a unit of the 6th Panzer Division and at the time the letter was written, it was near Rshew in Russia, in early spring 42, the Div, was send to France for a deserved rest, that rest lasted until Dec 1942 but the Russians meanwhile had re taken Stalingrad and poised for a breakthrough at the Don River. The 6th Pz Div. was back near Charkov in early 43.
