Dear Christel

Thank you for the letter from Oct 6th , I am not glad that you write letters that sound without hope. Is it that bad? I can not believe it. You worry to much, and I am glad that your letters reach Berlin so fast I will try and write often.

Berlin Oct 13th 44

My dear beloved Christel.

I am so glad to get your letter today, it brought sunshine and happiness to me. A present from God, that I met you, for whom I will do anything. There is nothing better to know, then that at home there is a person that will wait for me. I thought I was lost in life, I was very much down, now there is light in my life, My life has a new meaning, I know what it means to love someone, I had one bitter disappointment in my life. I has in a hopeless state after I lost my leg, I have learned to admire and love a person, I promise you that I will never ever disappoint you. Let me know whether you become my beloved wife. If you was with me now, I would not know what to do with myself. I want you to be by my side as my beloved wife for the rest of our lives. Please do not despair to much, you are in good health , that is enough, what will these people say who lost relatives, lost ones and friends. Others run around and are cripples, I admire these people, I look up to them, little worries many people have, some more some less, I don’t want to argue about it, we are in a fight of enormous proportions of life and death, we have to win it by any means, and we will win it if we are hard amongst ourselves. What would happen if we weren’t ? Nobody is more confident than we, the soldiers, we know our enemies, we know what will happen if they would win. My Comrades are standing on fronts in the East, West, South and North full of fighting spirit to hold off the massive storm. We all know what will happen if we are subdued. That’s why we will stand our man, and re - enforce the back of the fighting troops. Maybe even I have to grab the Carbine again one day, but please don’t be sad, if I go to the eternal land, I shall be always with you in your heart, connected by love , if I am far away from you in battle, then danger is for me a play. I will come back, to see you again, to your heart that was so lonely. I have you now, Life has a meaning now, we will see each other again. So what will come? We shall win this war.

I will see to your wishes tomorrow, maybe I can get a shirt tomorrow, it will be an Wehrmacht shirt, you asked the cost? I want to give it to you as a present, I don’t ask you how much are the Cigarettes are you send. I will get the shirt next week I hope. I have not got it ye. But I hope to be able to get it to give it as a present to your Father. Well, that is all for now, and I must tell you that I am well and happy now so for now my beloved Christel, I wish you a good night,

Kisses and Greetings from your Waldfried.
