Dear Beloved in Oppertsau!

After a long pause I am able to write to you again.I am well and your card from August 25th I have received and thank you very much. It is very cold in ’ Russia, the conditions here are terrible. Paula, you wrote in your letter how I stand with my wedding arrangements? I can only tell you, there is at present no chance for it. In other words , the big love is gone and done with. You are surprised? Well , I have gotten used to it and if I survive the war, I shall find something else, or I stay single until I am an old Uncle. Paula please don’t let the children play with this letter, I don’t want anybody else to read it except the family. No other news from here, lets hope the war is over soon, I don’t look forward to a winter here.

Wishing you all the luck back at home.

Greetings your soldier Wilhelm Bartel.
