Russia January 6th 1942

Dear Parents ! As I got now a lighter and candles, I can write to you when I feel like it, , the lighter works perfect , I can get fuel for it here. I am well and hope the same from you. But here we have a terrible cold spell 40 below and we just have to keep on with it, and in this cold the Russians do not think of attacking , same as us. The horses dying like flies now, the state we are in, there is no chance of starting a spring offensive . Christmas and New Year is over and I suppose , everybody thought about back home. We had enough to eat and Father Christmas brought enough parcels for us but now the meager weeks will follow, no parcels, there is a restriction in place now for while. I ate the can of syrup, it was very good, and you can send another one . Once the restrictions are lifted, start with the 100 gram parcels, and right now I am looking to get a letter from you. Dear Mother, write often in these winter months , I keep thinking of home when there is nothing to do, I just wish I could be home in spring to help in the fields maybe you could apply for my release, if that happens, we have a party I promise, so please write soon anything from home what comes to your mind < Father, start my Motorcycle so it does not rust inside. How is the result from Trashing? Greetings to all of you. Heinrich
