Dear Parents and Grand Dad !

Yesterday I got a letter from you dated from Dec 17th and I am glad to hear from you. I am well and hope the same from you. We are having a very cold spell here, and standing guard in this cold is no fun. We have a small bunker stove that we do not let go cold. Here we also have a Horse illness and many horses have died, last month alone 100 of them. The only fodder is straw and water for them, whatever will happen in the spring, because of having no horses, we can not move the guns, we either leave here soon without the guns, or we need a lot of horses again. So please make sure that nothing happens to your horses at home. Once a horse is gone, there is no miracle that you will get another one soon enough. Dear Father, do not use the Tractor to much in cold weather. I hope the parcel with the Sugar beet syrup comes soon. Greetings for now

Heinrich.
