Russia January 21* 1942

Dear All,

I started a letter but iam sitting a foot away from the stove and you can believe when I say, that you never experienced a a cold so intense as it is here. Even in your milder winter nobody ventures outside or send live4stock out, but not here, we have to get out in daytime fetching straw , at night we have to do sentry duty. Those who come back from Russia in later time and are healthy are lazy administrators but not soldiers. Dear Mother, I keep asking for food parcels , without them , I would die, if only you send 2 pound parcels again, but keep sending the small ones, even 2 ounces are good enough. If there is a slice of sausage in, that’s enough to have it on a slice of bread. Please do pray for me every day and fora better future. If only the winter would end here soon. There is nothing going on here otherwise. So I send you alll my heartfelt Greetings. Heinrich
