Russia Feb 20th 1942

Dear Parents and Grand dad !

Same days as I had mail from you, I also wrote back to you and you wrote that you are well but so am I. Don’t take much notice of my complains in the letters, the terrible winter is at fault but maybe the worst is over now. The sun is coming up higher now, the days from Dec 1* to Feb 16th were the worst, not a day below 20 Minus C and some days it was over 40 below. On one of the coldest days I was out on guard and the skin on my face peeled off but my feet were well protected and so were my fingers. One of my Comrade froze to death , he was from Stratagem , I thought I would never get through that winter at the time. We never got any of the winter clothing that was promised us, some only had the thin gloves . Nobody seems to know where all the collected winter clothing has ended up. Those men that are far from a warming stove now, don’t need any winter clothing anymore, they froze to death, it shows you the careless attitude in this world, My January parcel will roll in too one day I hope. I heard that it is not so easy now to slaughter a pig and your decision to get Chickens maybe a good one. Recently I mailed 120 Marks and in March another 100 will come so just keep things going , look after the flower garden, And paint the Kitchen when you can. I hope to get out of Russia this summer Gerd is still with me,. Is it true that in

Germany now are Church bells are being melted down for making ammunition?

Many Greetings Heinrich.
